Can a NSW vehicle be inspected in Queensland?

For an eligible NSW light vehicle temporarily outside NSW, Transport for NSW can accept an inspection report from an inspection station authorised by the relevant interstate authority, including a Queensland-approved inspection station. The report must cover inspection details comparable to the NSW safety inspection requirements and show the relevant items have been inspected and passed as suitable.

This is not a normal NSW pink slip

NSW eSafety inspection stations issue electronic safety inspection reports inside the NSW system. A Queensland workshop does not issue a normal NSW eSafety pink slip. Instead, the interstate process relies on an acceptable interstate inspection report and the NSW renewal process.

Who is this for?

• NSW residents who are temporarily in Queensland with their NSW-registered light vehicle.
• Vehicles located more than 50 km from the NSW border.
• Vehicles that need an inspection for NSW registration renewal and are otherwise eligible to renew interstate.

What you should do before booking

Check your NSW registration renewal notice and confirm that a safety inspection is required. If your situation is unusual—such as an unregistered vehicle, identity issue, written-off vehicle, heavy vehicle or permanent move to Queensland—contact Service NSW or Transport for NSW first, because a different inspection pathway may apply.

Report timing

NSW guidance states that interstate inspection reports used for renewal are generally valid for 42 days, or less if the issuing state has an earlier validity period. Interstate inspection reports are not processed in exactly the same way as an online NSW pink slip.
