When do I need a Queensland safety certificate?
A safety certificate is commonly required for transferring a registered light vehicle to a new owner, moving an interstate vehicle onto Queensland registration, and re-registering an unregistered light vehicle, subject to applicable exemptions.
Do I need a safety certificate before advertising a car?
No. Queensland no longer requires a current safety certificate before you advertise a registered vehicle for sale. In most private-sale cases, the seller still needs to obtain and provide a current certificate before disposing of the vehicle to the buyer.
How long does a QLD safety certificate last?
For most private sales it is current for 2 months or 2,000 km, whichever comes first. For dealer sales it is generally current for 3 months or 1,000 km, whichever comes first.
How much is a Queensland light-vehicle safety certificate inspection?
The prescribed inspection fee for a light motor vehicle up to 4.5t GVM is $102.70 including GST from 1 July 2026. Separately authorised repairs or parts are not included in that inspection fee.
What happens if my vehicle fails?
We explain the failed inspection items. Repairs are separate from the inspection and are only carried out with authorisation. The applicable reinspection process depends on the certificate and timing requirements.
Does a roadworthy mean the car is mechanically perfect?
No. A safety certificate inspection is limited to minimum safety standards. It is not a comprehensive mechanical inspection, service or pre-purchase assessment.
Can you do an NSW pink slip in Brisbane?
Not a normal NSW eSafety pink slip. However, Transport for NSW may accept a qualifying interstate inspection report for an eligible NSW light vehicle temporarily interstate and more than 50 km from the NSW border. See our NSW Roadworthy in Queensland page for the conditions.
